Choosing and Using a Pedometer
- Pedometers vary in cost and purpose. Consider purchasing the simple variety which just measures steps rather than the more complex (which measure miles, calories, stride length, and/or time) until you are sure you will use the pedometer. Look for one with a clip to keep it secure to your clothes.
- When using a pedometer, firmly clip it to a belt or waist band around your waist in order for it to properly work. It needs to be positioned above your hip bone because it is recording the movement of your hip as you walk. Clip it firmly. Don’t let it flop around because it will not record your steps properly and you are likely to lose it. It works best on regular terrain and reasonably accurate on a treadmill. It is less accurate on other gym equipment such as elliptical trainers or stair steppers. It does not work with a bicycle.
